You should read what Chekhov and Bulgakov said about the lunatic wonk Stanislavski. They both despised him and given they knew him I would trust their judgement.
Chekhov said that Stanislavski did not understand what his plays were about - Having the cast make pigeon noises off stage. Bulgakov wanted to know why they just couldn't act.
It's all about pretending - like little kids do to perfection. Read Chekhov before you mince about the stage like a demented mongoose
