Gianni my father was one of the most gifted performers I have ever known. If he weren't my dad the opinion would be the same. Jussi is in a class all his own, my favorite tenor!Gianni inspired me to look for the good qualities in all artists. I could criticize and compare singers as many do on Y T but that was not my dad's way and out of respect for him neither will I. Jussi and Zinka in the tomb scene from Aida - it doesn't get any better! Opinions like tastes may change with maturity.

Mesmerizing is a great description of dad in this role. He told me at least two of his Nedda's were convinced he had become Canio and feared for their lives. At the end of Vesti La Giubba his acting interpretation added an element to Canio character that had the audience mesmerized. You hear the audience stunned and hesitating before their applause. By the way, his translation of that aria is wonderful.

I would have loved to hear him sing this one live. Powerful. Touching. Mesmerizing. One of my favorite Opera's sang here by a clear master.

I think his voice is too loud and lacks beauty and feeling. I am a big fan of Jussi Bjorling and if you listen to him singing it is just beautiful and full of emotion.

Mario and him were good friends. I have a live version that some think is better, though this is rich.
