I have a suspicion there is a raven's nest nearby. Ravens like shiny things and might have picked it up to trick out the nest. It might have dropped it while trying to get it there, though, hence, on top of the snow, no tracks.

We can joke now about it, but still it works, and back then they didnt have much painkillers or cheap ones. It was probably mostly alcohol for that back then, they didn't even have aspirn yet till it was artificially make in the 1900's or something by Bayer.
