It appears that the deer fell on the ice near the residents pole building, allowing the wolf to catch up and make the kill. During the night, the wolf then dragged the deer across the yard, stopping at various points to eat. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources an estimated 520 gray wolves currently live in the Upper Peninsula.

There are more wolves in Michigan than most people know. There are some as far south as Iosco County.
