disorientation 2011 presents...

SHOWDOWN AT GROUND ZERO
A Retrospective on the tenth anniversary of 9/11

with Sunera Thobani

"This new fight, this new war against terrorism that is being launched is very old. And it is a very old fight of the West against the rest... the lesson we have learned, and the lesson that our politicians should have learned, is that you cannot slaughter people into submission... The West for 500 years has believed that it can slaughter people into submission and it has not been able to do so, and it will not able to do so this time either."

For these comments in October 2001, Sunera Thobani faced tremendous backlash, including violent threats. Join us ten years later to determine just how much the dust has settled.

Dr. Thobani was the first woman of colour to serve as president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. Committed to making the politics of anti-racism central to the women's movement, Ms. Thobani has written and spoken on many issues, including the impact of globalization on women's citizenship; Canadian immigration and social policy; new reproductive technologies; violence against women; and women and APEC. She teaches at the University of British Columbia and is a founding member of the cross-Canada Researchers and Academics of Colour for Equity (RACE) network.

  • Hi, thanks for sharing! Did you record the questions and answer period as well? I'd be grateful to re-listen to some her replies again. Thanks!
