Thye Shin - Blizzard Holiday Card Contest 2011 Submission

Hi, my name is Tan Thye Shin and I play World of Warcraft with a guild called The Bronze Talon on US-Suramar. I'm a designer based in Malaysia (in the winners' list I'm listed as being from Singapore, which is where I used to work because in the drop-down menu, Malaysia was missing from the list although it is an eligible country. So I had to use my mailing address in Singapore to submit a complete form...) and this is my submission for Blizzard's Holiday Card Contest 2011.

I drew the dragon, and my sister, Tan Yi Chuin, who works for a games company called Orion Arts in Singapore, helped to color it after agreeing to collaborate for this submission. I intended to submit a pop-up card last year but by the time I found out about the Holiday Card Contest in 2010, I only had a day to finish it. So I made it a point to submit it this year instead.

The card was designed to look like a Christmas gift card and there's a warning to the recipient before opening it to be level 85 and well-geared. Waiting inside the card is Deathwing, ready to turn n00bs and unsuspecting victims to ashes.

It took me approximately an hour to draw Deathwing, and then my sister colored him. And then 2 hours to design it and about 6 hours to construct it (cutting, measuring, pasting, etc).

Thanks to my sister for coloring Deathwing and my girlfriend for helping me take this video.

*Edit - Since 2012 will also be the Year of the Dragon in the Lunar Calendar, and the Lunar New Year is celebrated on January 23, it is only appropriate for me to say Happy New Year of the Dragon to everyone!

I wish I could buy one of these. It would have made the best Christmas card, as my boyfriend and I both raid lead a guild in WoW. We downed Deathwing right around the holidays if I remember correctly.

I'm so jealous of the prizes you won, I had no idea about the contest and totally missed it, but I still wouldn't have won over that work of art. Keep up the amazing skill. Seeing what you can do makes me motivated to get better so that maybe one day I can do just as well as you.
