The habitat of the glow worms (Lampyris noctiluca) featured in this video is a roadside verge in rural Cambridgeshire. The nights in late June were warm enough for the females to venture out to attract a mate with their bright lights.

  • Lovely, Nathan, thank you. You know, your verse also describes my search for the male. I have previously only ever seen the females. I crooned all the way home and had a big grin on my face.

  • Beautiful, dear R!

  • Thanks again, Annie. Filming the creatures, esp. the mating ones, was at times quite hairy. I had to crouch in the lane, slumped over the verge, with the camera on the ground. That night there were lots of cars going past. Several drivers stopped to ask if I was all right. For the last 20 secs. or so I had to hold the camera as the animals were going to ground; hence the slight shake.

  • How lovely. I have never seen a glow worm before. Only read about them in childrens books. Maybe its to cold here. Now I will do a little research. Thanks for sharing.
