what happens at 4:45? suddenly we've jumped forward from sourkraut to Cape Horn!

Makes you wonder why someone didn't work out what was different about the sailors lives on ship and off it, that would cause scurvy in one location and not the other. You would think they could have itemised the diet of each environment and make tests to work out what was causing it.

Its kinder than I would have been. I would have then denied the sailor all food and let him starve to death on the deck.

a dozen back then was getting off lightly. Two dozen lashes were a bit light too. Most captains did four dozen or more lashes for most offenses
