The Fleetwoods started out as a female duo from Olympia, Washington consisting of Gretchen Christopher and Barbara Ellis. They added one of their male high school classmates, Gary Troxel, with the original intent of using him as a trumpet player, but when Gary created the opening "do be do" hook for "Come To Me Softly", it was obvious he would become part of the vocal harmonization.
"Come To Me Softly" was the #1 song in the nation for all of March, 1959 and one of the all-time great pop hits in recording history.

  • Bonnie Guitar discovered and rehearsed this group, wrote the vocal parts , arranged and produced the record in a studio with engineer Carney Barton on the 5th avenue in downtown Seattle. This was not a home recording. I was about 7 years old when my mom Bonnie recorded this and the rest of the Fleetwood album. I would lay (very quietly) in the corner of the studio and half sleep while they did take after take to get the soft sound she was looking for.

  • @jerryy224 Thanks for the note and insight. I think your mom did an incredible job on this.

  • He has such a pure, sweet voice. I wish singers of today still aspired for purity of voice, rather than complexity of music. <3
