http://www.biobees.com This hive was designed to be exceptionally easy to build, using mostly 4"x1" rough timber. It can be used with half-Dadant frames or top bars, and has a capacity equivalent to at least three Warre boxes or one Modified Dadant brood chamber. Smaller units can be added on top, increasing its capacity and allowing for some honey harvesting.
My purpose in creating this hive was to build a box that could be left largely undisturbed, while remaining 'inspectable' if required, and having some capacity for honey storage beyond the main chamber.
This is a flexible design and I hope others will use it as a basis for further experimentation, which is why I am putting it into the public domain in the spirit of 'open source beekeeping'.

  • How would you harvest the honey from the longer, free form hive? Would you have to break the combs?

  • phil i like that you are a tinkerer and not satisfied with the langstroth and the status quo of beekeeping. i look forward to seeing how the bees take to the pagoda. i imagine they with like the deepness and how its mimicks a true hollow tree. keep on tinkering. my TBH (based on your book) is going strong. thanks.

  • i see. a bit like robin dartington's hive. but with narrower frames. and taller supers..
