The EPA recently announced new standards limiting the amount of toxic air emissions from coal-fired power plants. Center for American Progress Distinguished Senior Fellow Carol Browner explains the public health benefits of these new mercury standards, why coal-fired power plants can meet the new standards without harm, and how the President's actions on reducing air pollution compare to recent administrations.

    Federal law trumps state law.

  • if the states have these standards in place already then what exactly is the point of the federal government doing it as well?

  • the coal fired plants are capable of meeting these standards, but these politicians dont understand what it takes. it will raise prices. it will cause shortages.

  • Those Republican idiots are out to poison us the death. Those gas-fracking idiots have poisoned the hell outta aquifers in several states. They're dumping radioactive toxic chemical waste into the very rivers and streams that supply our drinking water across the country. Cheney exempt them from the Safe Water Act. The EPA hid damaging reports from the public. You even got Texas politicians getting busted forging EPA reports of hi-levels of radiation in people's drinking water for like 5 years.
