It has become a fashion for many people to talk against dowry system practiced in our society. Dowry should be seen as a part of financial distribution among family members in our society. As of my understanding, Islam had given an equal or even more financial security to woman.

Islam had put the financial requirements of women on father, and after the marriage on father and husband. As per Islam, Expenses of sick women has to be taken care by father/brother/society and not by husband. But in our society it is the husband who is taking care of women during medical exigencies.

Even though we talks on equality, we are a male dominated society, which is a natural one. It can be very well observed that, in almost all families, male children get more financial assistance from parents than female. In our society we can see people financially helping grandchildren of their son and not that of daughters. In most of the cases, during property sharing women are not getting their dues as per 1:2 ratio specified by Islam.

So in practice, marriage is the only occasion during which women can get some financial assistance from their parents, even though the terms are dictated by future in-laws. So people will give this (with or without happy) as gold, money, car etc. as per a negotiated pact before fixing the marriage. After the marriage this money is used for enhancing the living comfort of the couple.
