The highlight of the 2009 fiesta held in Torre del Compte was the "Concurso de disfraces" or "competition of disguises" held on Saturday night in the Plaza Mayor. 11 peña groups took part spanning all age ranges. Our peña, 32 people plus 2 children, dressed as chess pieces, the children being the timing clocks. Rather than stage a chess game we carried out a theatrical enactment which basically went along the following lines:
The pawns, peones, entered followed by the other pieces to take their place on the chess board.
The white king gives the order for the white pawns to advance, then the black pawns advance, then the white pawns another square forward then the black pawns. They then attack each other and limp off to the side to "die".
Other pieces are then called to battle in turn, the rooks, the knights and the bishops, torres, caballos y alfiles.
The two queens, reinas, then do battle with their sceptres and the black queen "kills" the white queen.
The white king, el rey, advances on the black king and a sword fight ensues resulting in the "death" of the black king.
The white king is enthralled by the beauty of the black queen, kisses her hand, she kneels in acceptance of him and off they go, followed by the other pieces.
We came first and won a ham!
