FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP sites are a place where computer files can saved and accessed by going to the ftp address. Just like you would go to a website. FTP was invented in 1971. It was invented to ease the transfer of files on a network. With the internet becoming more wide spread it allowed transfer of files for any computer who could connect even across the world and how to use FTP is quite important.

Before websites as we know now FTP was used by electronic companies to allow customer to connect and download drivers and owners manuals. Now it is much easier and we can just go to the website. Now days, learning how to use FTP is a required skill for webmasters.

There are a two main ways to access a ftp site. The first way is through your computer's file browser. All you need to do is is open up your file browser and type in the ftp address in the navigation bar. The ftp address can be written out two different ways. The first is similar to a website address, ftp.nameofsite.com. The second will look like an IP (internet protocol) address, i.e ftp.195.222.545.1. Some ftp sites are password protected.You will be prompted to enter a user name and password. Then you will be able to see the files. There are different file access levels. Depending on how the ftp server owner set it up will determine if you are able to edit or delete files on the server.

The second way to access an ftp server is to use an ftp program. There are plenty of free ftp programs available for download as well as ones available for purchase. Always download the free trial and see if you like the way the program is laid out before purchasing it. Since FTP programs can vary slightly. The advantages of using an ftp program is the many different features. Depending on the program you pick.

Learning how to use FTP with a program you will have the ability to not only access FTP sites but you can turn your own personal computer into a FTP site. You will have the ability to save a list or bookmark the FTP sites you go to. That will make it easier to access in the future. Most FTP programs will have a window with two sides. One side will show what is on your computer and the other side will show what is on the FTP server. It does make it easier to follow what is where without having to have multiple windows open.
