Where did this one piece of paper come from? What is the effect on biodiversity when we throw out this one piece of paper?
Biodiversity is the species richness and the variety of life in the world. Species richness is important because it maintains a balance in nature and also provides humans with many ecosystem services. The ecosystem has aesthetic values, but is also vital to maintain our way of life. It provides us with undeniable economic value while the wealth of species diversity provides us with a wide variety of food, medicine, and products. Despite the importance of species, many people dont realize the impact on the environment when they simply throw away a piece of paper. Currently, we are in a biodiversity crisis as species are becoming extinct, but we continue to exploit habitats for our consumer needs. Which leads us to H.I.P.P.O.
H
(birds chirping.)
A piece of paper starts with one tree but many people dont realize how important one tree is to our environment and the species that depend on it.
In order to make products from trees or to build on land, the trees must be cleared first, and this leads to habitat loss.
When one tree disappears, many more follow because people never cut down just ONE tree. Even the loss of one tree and the destruction of a small area of the forest can have a big effect.
(no more birds chirping)Many species depend on the forest for shelter. Loss of trees leaves many animals homeless. Thus, they tend to die off because they are forced out of their environment, and there is closer interaction with humans. (pictures of deer on highway, squirrels looking through trash)
I
Introduced species also affect biodiversity.
There are invasive trees, weeds, and animal species that thrive in their new habitats at the expense of others. Kudzu, for example, is an invasive weed that climbs on other plants and blocks out the sun, killing native species. While invasive species survive, they reduce the other species that cannot compete with them in the habitat, contributing to biodiversity loss.
P
Pollution is a major factor that affects the environment and the species that live there. Air pollution affects the available gases that different species depend on to function. When trees are removed from the environment along riverbanks and other water sources, erosion occurs that brings not only sediments, but also chemicals into the water that kill marine wildlife.
P
Population growth- With increasing technology and medical advancement, people are living longer while babies continue to be born. With population growth, more land needs to be cleared for homes, which results in more habitat loss. More resources are needed to come up with the products. For example, more paper needs to be produced if there is a greater population in school, which means more resources are needed.
O
Overconsumption includes exploiting our resources and being wasteful. Fisherman are overharvesting fish and not leaving enough to repopulate. Forests are being completely stripped to obtain all the wood to make products.
We are unintentionally causing the extinction of many species. When just one species disappears, even the smallest organisms such as insects, fungi, and microscopic organisms, as well as larger organisms, such as pandas are affected. When trees disappear, other species lose their homes and food. The extinction of any species causes a chain reaction as their absence affects other species that depend on them, and these losses reduce biodiversity.
The factors in H.I.P.P.O. are all interrelated, and it is a terrible cycle. They all contribute to loss of biodiversity, and when species die off, there is no way to bring them back.
We need to value the trees and should consider first what other options we have before destroying them. We are affecting more species than we realize. Society must be careful of the way we use our resources and people must change their wasteful habits. Do your bit to preserve our environment. Recycle and save. Bring your own bags to the supermarket. Petition to get laws to restrict harvesting and protect habitats. (recycling symbol, planting trees?)

One piece of paper may not seem like a big deal, but one species can make a difference. One person can also make a difference to the world and prevent the loss of biodiversity. So lets all work together to save the earth!
