The wedge is falling down onto the wood. Watch the video again and you can see the cuts on the top side. The frame rate / stroboscopic effect of the filming makes it appear that the wheel is turning in the wrong direction.

I knew a guy once that had a (home made) direct-drive PTO table saw, with a 5'6" disc, he hand rolled logs onto it, with no guard or engine cut for 11yrs with no problems.
He did a Cambridge bungee from a barn beam eventually but my point is, the most dangerous part of these machines is the nut that holds the log!

Mind you they are splitting soft woods, I would be terrified to see this beast in operation splitting some of the stringy hard red elm I get into a lot.
