This video (no sound for copyright reasons) looks at the art used and produced in Britain during the Roman period of AD 43-410. It will be of particular interest to students and teachers of Archaeology and Classical Civilization courses, especially those tackling the OCR A-Level A2 paper CC7 Roman Britain: life in the outpost of the Empire. Romano-British art is a unique conflation of Classical and Celtic styles. Some see Celtic art as a style more concerned with symbolism than the realism of Classical Art. Others note the resemblance of Celtic styles to children's art, especially the concentration on key features like the eyes, and see it as infantile. You decide. This first part looks at the background and then examines the art of mosaics and artefacts. Part 2 looks at sculpture and the late treasure hoards

  • 2- there is also a design similar to Cuniform script. those sections of tiny triangles. its possible this villa owner was not Latin but born in the middle east and became a Roman. and ended up in Britain. and he wanted reminders of his homeland in the mosaic floor work.

  • There's no doubt about an eastern influence but that doesn't mean the owner had been there: there is a lot of evidence for the influence of different artistic and religious motifs crossing the Roman world - without specific evidence for the name and origin of the owner (and in Britain we don't know anything specific about any villa owners) you just can't say.

  • 4:53........the owner of that villa had been in the far east. some of the symbols in the design(swastikas) can be seen in Lebanon on carvings, and as far east as India.
