Sarah Palin, Joe Vogler, and The Alaskan Independence Party

Sarah Palin and her husband Todd have had a long and, as of March 2008, ongoing association with the Alaska Independence Party. Tod Palin was a registered member of the AIP from 1995 to 2002. Sarah Palin attended several of their conventions and in March 2008 she delivered a welcoming address to the AIP convention. The Alaska Independence Party has advocated secession from the United States. Joe Vogler, the founder of the AIP, was murdered in 1993 while attempting to buy plastic explosives on the black market. Wonder what he was planning to blow up?

Why shouldn't she welcome them? The AIP is not a radical group. One radical member doesn't make the group radical. The AIP wants to govern under their own laws and not the U.S.'s, and if that makes them radicals, then so bet it. In most capacities, the members of the AIP are like a Moose lodge. They get together and slam their in-season alcohol and talk about how proud they are to be Alaskans.

And, get real, there's no way McCain didn't know. It's only a big deal when taken out of context.

Joe Vogler was not "one radical member" he was the founder of the AIP.

Advocating secession is indeed a radical position. The last time it was brought up for serious consideration we had a Civil War (1861-65) that settled the question for most reasonable people but apparently not Sarah Palin or the AIP.

So yes that does make the AIP radicals - no matter how proud or drunk they are. And it disqualifies them and Sarah Palin from any position of trust in the US government including VP.

Secession is an American tradition literally as old as the Republic itself. We seceded from the British Empire, formally with the Declaration of Independence. The Southern States peacefully seceded from the USA until Lincoln sent ships full of troops and supplies to Fort Sumter to enforce his Tariff at the Charleston harbor. Even then, there were no casualties when the South Carolinians fired on Sumter, save for a horse. We supported the states who seceded from the USSR. Deo vindice!
