President Toope, honored members of the convocation, fellow graduates, ladies and gentlemen. I am incredibly honored to be speaking here before you today.

Not too long ago, I woke up one morning after taking my nice warm shower and I thought to myself... wow, this is a very exciting time to be graduating. Why? Let me tell you two reasons.

Firstly, 2008 marks UBC's Centenary. Yes, 100 Years. Grads, I hope none of you has reached that age already, but if you have, you've been in school for way too long. This milestone goes to show the deep history that this university has to offer and we are among a precious few on this planet to be a part of that.

Secondly, speaking of our planet, have you noticed that the fuzzy squirrels that run around campus have been getting bigger, bigger and bigger? My fellow graduates, if we stayed here any longer, very soon, we will be sharing our precious classroom space with these animals. Can you imagine? What horror, what tragedy, but let's not get too carried away here.

Ladies and gentlemen, for these past four years, we have transitioned from naïve wide eye teenagers into mature adults. Some of us have gotten wiser, more intelligent, whereas others have lost hair, developed wrinkles, grown sideways, slept through an exam, failed an exam, lost an umbrella, lost a shoe and the list goes on and on and on. But what we remember most about our time here, is not our classes, but these incredible experiences that we have endured.

UBC has given us more than just a degree, it has given us the tools to shape our lives and to eventually take over the world... maybe not. But on a serious note, with great knowledge, comes a greater responsibility to our society as well. And as a fine example of this, we as a graduating class have decided on the following graduation gifts for our university.

The Sprouts store located in the SUB will receive $6,000
Agora Cafe located in the MacMillan Building will receive $2,900
The UBC Farm will receive $6,000
Engineering without Borders $1,000
The Arts Collection Catalogue $2,000

And finally, I will be receiving $1000 for giving this speech.

To conclude, most speeches have some generic quote from a generic famous person, but I'd like to take things a little differently here today and I'd like to quote from my uncle. Yes, my Uncle Darren. I see you hiding there in the back. He once gave me three simple words to live by. Seize the day.

Okay, so maybe someone else made up that phrase, but to my fellow graduates, let's never forget to seize the day.

1. Make the most of your opportunities.
If there is a handsome young fellow sitting next to you, introduce yourself and get his number.

2. Don't waste your time living someone else's life. Make your own decisions and take that risk.

3. Live every day as if it was your very last.

Be sure to let your family and friends know how much they really mean to you.

So go forth my fellow graduates. Seize the day.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the graduating class of 2008. Thank you.
