Why can't modern pianists play this way?
-
When I was a child and teenager I worked (7 years) with a Gieseking's student. I really can say you that the quality of sound of this people is just wonderful...I remember when my teacher played. His sound (he got it from Gieseking) was amazing. Soooo beatiful! I am really proud to have and teach to my own students this kind of school. The school of sound and music, not only technique.

@Lukecash12 I love your VSOP acronym. :P And if anyone deserves it, it's Gieseking.

Magnifiche immagini, oltre che bella musica.

@otto6891 They probably can't, but won't because it's too fast.

@trajan75 agree, surely he had! and his Beethoven is marvelous...what a great "gift" we have... listen Chopin's Etude played by him also very nice

@otto6891 They are so much more angular, spastic, and take great lengths to show us their artistic license. So, I think a lot of today's pianist can take a lesson in refrain and expressivity from the VSOP (very superior older pianists).
What a genius Debussy was. His works are very difficult to play well on the piano, with the page almost solid black with notes, yet the music sounds so light and simple -- hence its brilliance. And Gieseking always made it look effortless, as though he was enjoying himself. Thanks for positng this!

@quatloosthx1138 I aggree with you Debussy's music is impalpable and iridiscent but as Marta Argerich says in an interesting interwiew ( on youtube ) the piano and his keyboard are a very strange though things that when played magically becomes tender and soft : try it ... Thanks you for your comment .
