That'll Be The Day

Most people refer to "standards" for jazz but all styles of music have standout hits that define the genre. Rock & Roll is no exception and Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day" is definitely one of those songs. The song is so influential that The Beatles (who were then called The Quarrymen) chose to cover it on their first ever recording session in Liverpool. Don McLean paraphrases the songs lyric in "American Pie" about the death of Holly and two other R&R greats when he sings "This'll be the day that I die"
