Hidden Techniques (kakushite 隠し手) are "hidden" in two ways. The first way is that they are "hidden" within the kata and are difficult to perceive without explanation. The other way they are "hidden" is that there is often much more going on in a tuite technique than is visible on the surface.

What looks like a simple joint lock usually contains multiple strikes which are difficult to see when the technique is done quickly. Thus they are "hidden" because they need to be explained by a teacher to understand their full implications.

  • I accidentally deleted this comment by jesusardo:

"It's funny to see something like old karate and to start where was the neko ashi dachi in the old karate???" Below is my reply. I alo created a playlist which illustrates that neko-dachi was nigh ubiquitous in old style karate.

  • I assume jesusardo meant in kata prior to the introduction to the public school system in 1908? Or perhaps you mean Nafiadi, Tumaidi, and Suidi prior to the Meiji restoration...

Neko-dachi (aka Neko-ashi-dachi) is in found in old Nafadi kata via Ryuei ryu, Tou'on ryu, Pangai-noon, and Goju-ryu. Nakama Chomo , Higa Yuchoku, Oyata Seiyu, and Nagamine Shoshin preserved old style Tumaidi and Suidi katas. All the above use Neko-dachi:

  • This is really great stuff! Even as a Shotokan karateka (with our total loss of many techniques over the years), I can still see more possibilities within techniques than those currently taught.

  • Thank you so much for showing the real side of Karate( todi), Ryukyu kempo kind regards.

  • That wrist technique oyo is in Goju Ryu Kata - Saifa. Very nice.
