http://www.SofaSkiSchool.com This lesson is an introduction to carving for intermediate skiers.
It should help people that have not discovered the edge yet to find this feeling. The main goal at this stage is to get the student NOT to turn his feet and slide but carve.
To achieve this i am using more inside ski lead and hip counter than necessary as this makes the rolling of the knees easier. Once the student realizes that the skis turn all by themselves these things are reduced to the amount necessary.
Instead of getting the student to edge by inclination - "leaning in" i stress the fundamental basic position. As i want to teach a technique which is consistent and works on the blues in the same way as on the black runs.

The main ski fundamentals are described in detail in the 3 main lessons of the DVD. Furthermore you will find lessons on skiing the steeps, short turns and 14 additional drills:

  • great drill going to avoriaz in 48 hours i will try this drill just in genral i am a intermediate skier who wants to learn to carve and tidy my turns up and look good have you got any tips?

  • @dolgellau100 good goal! The 3 main lessons of the dvd focus on the main ski fundamentals and the progressions and drills shown are aimed at helping people improve their fundamental skiing skills. Being able to carve a clean turn also on steeper terrain always comes back to ski fundamentals. Greets, K

  • I find a great drill for encouraging a twist in the hip is the Javalin. I wont explain it as we have google. But its important to emphasise this twist as it brings your stability when your going low. It also gets the pupil used to putting all their preasure on the outside ski (which is an extreme but still very good practice). And its a drill that had different difficulty levels and pupils can work through. I find it great when teaching.

Hope you see these comments as constructiove critisism.

  • I agree. The Javelin turn is a great drill and is also shown in the additional drills section on my DVD. For intermediate skiers i do prefer the drill shown here, as you can also do it at slower speed and in a sliding turn. Thank you for your input.

  • Over years I could acquire this technique quite well. I am still scared of steep slopes though! How to fix that?!?!?!?!?

  • On steeper slopes fundamental skiing skills become more important. This lesson is an add. lesson of my DVD and should show how being able to create outside ski pressure and how to initiate a turn are applied in carving. To improve your performance in skiing steeper terrain you would most likely need to spend some more time on these areas. On the DVD you will also find a chapter on skiing the steeps. Not every turn needs to be carved! Being able to slide a turn is just as important!

  • tee hee who saw the guy bale in the background...

  • lol at 1:35

  • Sometimes even instructors find it hard to spot what is going on in someones skiing, so why do we expect our clients to see these things. Often demos imho are way too static and don't show what is actually going on. Like the way superman flies, it looks great, but no one knows how he does it.

  • I believe that a demo should clearly show what is going on and I choose to slightly exagerate wanted movements in my demos to make them easier to spot. Apart from 4:25 which shows what happens when you pop too much. ;)

  • Generally a very good online lesson. Well done!

The only thing is you have way too much pop when you come out of a turn in your demo @1:25. I dont know if its intentional or not but if you are teaching you wouldnt want to do that in your demo.
