Mivel az első black metál azaz a Venom(Thrash és Black Metál keveréke) volt az első, az ő második albumuk volt a "Black Metal" és egyik híres számuk volt a Countess Bathory. Valószínűleg innen kapta a nevét, Bathory, Hellhammer(majd később Celtic Frost) alkották az első black metál hullámot. A másodikat már a Burzum és a hasonlók vitték. Nem is csodálom hogy a Bathoryt helyezik elsőként a black metálok közé.
