Rebelling is going to be better thought out if the person is not drinking, so those who rebel by drinking, smoking, doing drugs are going to become addicted and rather than be known as intelligent critics of society they will be known as hooked. This is deplored by the woman in this case who is also overweight but does not consider herself as seriously impaired in her thinking processes as the alcoholic man often is.
It doesn't look like the drinker here is the one who thinks there's a problem, but for whatever it may be worth I just thought I'd mention that there is an effective medical (as opposed to AA, which is thinly-disguised religion) treatment for alcohol addiction. Google "The Sinclair Method" or check out The Cure for Alcoholism by Dr. Roy Eskapa. The Sinclair Method isn't well-known in the U.S. because of the 12-step treatment industry, but it has been used with 80% success in Europe for years.
