The dredging of Fremantle Harbour is of great concern to many people because the mouth of the Swab River has acted as a "sump" for contaminents. This is the place where for a very long time existed a natural bar of significance to Noongar peoples that was blown out by (RIP) the late CY O'Connor to enable Fremantle to become the commercial port it has been for WA and still is. This act changed the very nature of the Swan River Baisin (proper name Derbarl Yerrigan") River mouths and estuaries are particularly important to Aboriginal peoples across the world. In an arid, & sparsely populated coun try it is unimaginative to create more land from within the ocean using relatively recent contaminents from within the catchment of this mighty river whilst possibly polluting beaches like North Freo, Cottesloe and maybe even Broome or Bali. And act surprised when dolphins die!
Noongar elders probably look at this with amazement and it is SHAMEFULL so many have passed away before our society has truly acknowledged their culture or rightd on this land. RIP Ken Colbung - always was, and always will be..
