The Picture of Dorian Gray - Part 8 of 10

Synopsis: Dorian Gray (Peter Firth) is a privileged man who sits for artist Basil Hallward (Jeremy Brett). Gray is so happy with the results that he wishes he could look that way forever; Hallward tells him it could be so, but for a terrible price. Gray soon discovers that he no longer ages, but his portrait does instead, and as he becomes more corrupt and stops putting a check on his appetites, he discovers just how great a toll is portrait is forced to bear.

  • ok so the shot of basil's face right before he gets stabbed? Epic.

  • Damn, the moment Dorian starts unbuttoning that jacket...

I don't think the words "You are scientific" and "You have made experiments" have ever sounded so exquisitely suggestive.

  • @RichardElden Its a shame because although Brett was a classically trained actor he did use method acting. Principally in his role as sherlock holmes. He literally became Holmes and it took a strain on his health. I think it was more his 'style' that marked him out as belonging to an earlier time. As I say his looks and intonation belong proper to melodrama, where they have their greatest effect, but unfortunately that particular genre had gone out of fashion by his time.

  • I only revisited this page to watch Jeremy Bretts amazing response to the picture. The blind terror and panic felt whilst trying to grope towards the trusted face of the beloved, only to be greeted with the remorseless eyes of a murderer in the once loved face is brilliantly conveyed. It is pure melodrama, the word has been used as a perjorative but for sheer emotional power the form can be very affecting. I think if the Victorians had seen Brett they would have put him up there with Irving.

  • VERY good acting!!

  • The dude at 8:53 looks like the actor who plays Basil in the newest version of the movie

  • @RichardElden i know but its too ugly to bear!

  • the portrait should be justin bieber's face

  • @rnlaing totally ruined this part of the movie ]:

  • @JuanMacready You are utterly offensive in your remarks about the deceased Mr. Brett. A most troubling interjection into the comment section especially as he's done a most remarkably good show of Basil in this film.

  • Black out, Dorian's starting to exhibit signs of debauchery, oh next scene, he's already the most depraved man alive. Totally cut out the most important part of the book why don't you.

  • @bronteteri Brett was too old to play Basil.
