Existential Airport Anxiety

This is my response to the second half of Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, which the nerdfighter book club read this summer. Also quoted is David Foster Wallace's excellent if totally unfinished novel The Pale King.

Well, yes and no. The problem is that it's not just people thinking about the community badly. It's the fact that the relationship in the novel isn't just unrealistic, it's abusive. Some people are going to read 50 Shades of Grey and think that this is what a real 24/7 D/s relationship is like, that it is healthy. These people might then seek someone to dominate them, only to realize that there is a lot more to BDSM when it is too late.

That's the risk of art. We shouldn't ban Lolita because it makes a pedophile a likable intelligent character. We need to trust people to be able to differentiate between stories and life. No story is to blame for the base judgements people draw from them.

After watching dozens of John's videos in airports, this thought only just now came to mind.

I'm not taking it seriously either. I was simply saying it's bad porn. (probably, I haven't read it)

But if you want to talk about it from a feminist perspective then I'd personally argue that the sex-positive position ("women should be allowed to enjoy whatever sexual fantasy they want without being judged") is way less sexist then it's counterpart. For one reason or another the unrealistic power dynamic of this book turns some people on. I say, let 'em have at it.

Books and what they say are REALLY important. This book perpetuates basically every rape myth that has ever existed and since we live in a rape culture, this affirmation and the positive response to it is incredibly disturbing. It romanticizes stalking and abuse. It also has very problematic gender roles. The female character is totally pure and naive to the point of absurdity before meeting the male character and then he has to TEACH her about her own sexuality. That's why I take it seriously.
