Saturn ION
2005-07 models
FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Acceptable
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Acceptable Acceptable Good Good Acceptable Acceptable

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Saturn ION was introduced in the 2003 model year as a replacement for the SL. The size of the steering wheel was increased beginning with 2005 models and its number of spokes was increased from two to four. Also, the driver airbag deployment characteristics were changed slightly.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar. Also during the impact, the steering wheel broke off from the column.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the neck and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. High head accelerations occurred when the dummy's head hit both the steering wheel through the airbag and the B-pillar, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible.

  • dlinkdj, they are not plastic...they have polymer panels. Just for cosmetic purposes, the IONS are dent resistant. They have the steel frame and cage undermeath. These test results are actually good ones.

  • actually, it is a light weight aluminium frame, the side panels are designed to de dent proof hence the polymer which also save on weight for fuel economy. I have personaly been in a 50mph offset frontal impact in my 2007 Ion. I walked away with no injuries and the car was still able to be driven under its own power to the side of the road.the funny bit is that the 87 Chevrolet K3500 that i hit was totally destroyed and had to be towed.

  • Saturn was the very last company GM cut BC Buick sales are soo heavy in China. If it wasn't for China Buick would have been cut and Saturn would have been kept.

  • @Dspecht97 Spring Hill, Tennessee

  • @tslater131 Saw a coupe hit a bridge column a 60mph... cabin was still completely in tact. That's why i love my 05' coupe.

  • Looks like an eggshell exploding.

  • my brother had one of these a while ago. Wasn't very good.

  • garbage

  • @dlinkdj I agree Saturn is the only good american car compony out there and so is Chevy. Either the Saturn was made in the US or in Canada same With Chevy. They also both have very good reliabilty and are pretty cheap to maintain unlike buick or cadillac which costs a fourtune to maintain.

  • @GoranMPG Actually dumbshit the vin on my car starts with a 1 indicating USA. Some chevrolets which should be higher that saturn right?? vin start with 3 and 2 which 2 is canada and 3 is mexico.

  • Saturn was the only GM car that didnt shared its body and look with the other GM car plus that it was a very safe reliable and good looking car , and in crashes, its aoutside "plastic" really worked protecting the people inside....
