i don't think they claim Miao culture. they were perhaps a subdivision of the Miao culture back then but split and ended up more north.

If the Miao people once had an Army...It must have been the Ch'u armed forces during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan (Choj Yeej) is from the Ch'u Kingdom.
