The meaning of the lyrics for "Firefly"

Firefly

Fireflies drift by.
One cent for you to buy a pineapple.

Fireflies drift away.
One cent for you to buy a sack.

This song is a Taiwanese folk song, which is very popular in Taiwan.
The lyrics is without meaning but sounds lovely with perfect acoustic effect of language.
Taiwanese is one of the most complicated language, which has 8 diferent varieties of accent. Therefore, the language sound melodic. It is a natural melody. Hence, it is a pentatonic scale (五聲音階).
For example, 白鷺鷥 (some kind of white bird, egret in English) 車畚箕
If I say this sentence in an extremely slow speed like this:
白-----鷺------鷥 ------, 車-----畚------箕-------.
Then, you may find a natural melody inside the language

Now, let us come back to this Firefly song:
The music try to implicate the flying patern of firefly and the twinkling of their light.
Hence, it goes like this: 火 (up )(twinkling) , 金 (down), ( twinkling ) 姑~~~~(slow flying, drifting) 丟(up )(twinkling), 丟(down)(twinkling), 來~~~~~(slow flying, drifting) (下同 )

  • There in Germany is a competition for choirs at the channel Chorwettbewerb ("tag").

You should think about sending the video as a video response..:)

  • The lyric of this song is not meaningful. It just demonstrates a perfect sound effect of Taiwanese language. It is so lovely and , hence, is the most popular children folksong in Taiwan.

Translation: Hue-Gim-Go: firefly Due due lai: keep on coming

Ji sen ji': one cent of money ho li: give you mue: buy on lai: pineapple

due due ki: keep on going away Ga ji: some kind of bag woven of thin robes Wilkommen

    Shane, Director of Earth Choir
