WURST IST DIE ANTWORT AUF ALLES !!!!

I live in Ukraine (the former USSR) and I can tell, that here Germany respect practically with everything, at a possibility of 60-70 % of people would leave to live there immediately.
Let, that Germans dry and cold in dialogue also speak, but it is better than impudence, intemperance, fervour and bad manners.
Germany is a high quality, cleanliness, accuracy, diligence, BMW, Mers, medicine, beer, Drindl.....

im german and i love my country....but as a german person you have to be careful with things like that...because some stupid people in the world think that we drive to work with a tank and stupid things like that ( unfortunately a lot of american people.... )

@MrMarianna1701 but that's because of our history, where extreme national pride and patriotism lead to a very very dark place where no german ever wants to go again, so even now we're still in shock70 years after the 2nd world war and holocaust, and everytime somebody wants to say "I'm proud to be german" they feel like they have to say: "and by the way: I am no racist or faschist" . our history still is present, and that's the way it is.

Nice people.

I think the response of the elderly woman about whether she is proud to be German was a great example of "typisch Deutsch" that nobody mentioned: a knack for precision. Perhaps "stolz" just isn't quite the right word, for the reasons she mentioned- it wasn't something she had achieved and thus was not "stolz". The same precision that goes into German autos goes into German expression. I'm a germanophile, and admire that effort at being precise.

@MrMarianna1701 I think we Germans do love our country. But if a German says he/she is proud to be German, there are thousands of people calling him/her a Nazi. That's why we just can't say things like that.

I think most of what you may have read is true. A german "pride" is not really existing. The generations after WW II were told that pride is "for the others, but not for us". Maybe because it showed us were false pride can lead.
Even modern generations are kinda suffering from the dark shadow of the Third Reich and got the urging feeling of apologizing for the cruelties in the Holocaust, although neither the parents, nor the grandparents of german teens took part in WW II

The segment on pride is so interesting. I've read that, because of Germany's history, which is filled with intense nationalism and some dark periods because of it, Germans can sometimes be really hesitant on being proud of their country. That isn't to say they aren't happy with where they live, but I think "proud" may have become a bit of a taboo. Of course, this is just based on what I've read. Can any Germans respond to this? Vielen Dank!

`proud would be the wrong word.` this is the idea. there are no borders in the world right now and being proud of who you are is something and being proud of being a part of a race is something. im learning german very slowly and i hope one day i can go there!
The part where the reporter asks people whether they're proud to be German really shocked me. I mean why do they hesitate to say " Yes we are proud to be German cause we love our country" ? It's almost as if they are ashamed of their country . Jesus such hospitality towards their own country . This is really sad. I am half Greek half Scottish and I certainly AM proud of being Greek and Scottish. I ,without question, love both of my countries and I would defo not be afraid to express this.

@MrMarianna1701
maybe it was good to make this video to get comments like yours. I do agree with you. I'm Polish living more than half of my life in Germany and I'm also proud and in love in both of my countries. And just like you, I will never have problems stating it.

Schon die Oma hat gewusst:
"Dummheit und Stolz wachsen aus einem Holz."
und recht hat sie gehabt.
(ignorance and pride grow from the same wood)
[from german: Holzkopf [coll./fig.] blockhead, bonehead]
P.S.: auch Stolz auf sog. "Leistung" IST dumm. ich bin stolz auf die Leistung ... der anderen :P nicht.

yes :) if you would watch the video closely then you would see clearly: all people are really glad and honored to be German. But let me use a funny parallel picture: if you be a noble person (sort of aristocratic) then you would never say: "I'm proud to be an aristocrat" because it would be really pathetic. You would rather say: I know that my role brings a lot of obligations to me (because you are supposed to be at the top of your possibilities)

And this is what a lot of Germans are doing, they say: we need to think, to reflect, to understand! We need to be able to analyze and to comprehend our situation so that we will be able to act accordingly and wisely. I want to give you an example: I'm really proud that Germany is quiting it's nuclear program.

They could do it hands down and gain a lot of advantage but they are not doing this because they are the best and they take the role of the spearheads of the new regenerative energy solutions. It will cost Germany a lot - but Germany will contribute to the enormous afford to save the world and our future.
