Footage, in video and pictures, of the Metro build at Derker and Oldham Mumps.

Putting my partisan feelings aside, and purely for historical reasons, I returned to Derker and Oldham Mumps, and filmed the progress of the construction of the tram lines along this part of the Oldham loop.

Firstly I filmed at Derker station. The tower looks as if it will be a lift from the platform to street level when finished. Then there is a quick view back down the line towards Oldham.

The next view is at "ground zero" (Oldham Mumps roundabout), where everthing has been levelled and the tracks and trams will cross at ground level. With the viaduct buttresses now gone there is a view back towards Oldham Mumps station along the line, and the rail buffers can be seen marking the end of the tracks that have been laid down.

The final views are of the new Mumps station (which I'm sure I've read is only temporary), and back down the line towards Clegg Street from the Gas Street bridge, showing the pantographs. Protective bridge panels have been put in place for when the line is electrified.

  • @allan5919 Thanks.

  • Nice to see some footage of the progress being made here.

    Excellent video.

  • @khankadet Thanks Chris. Interesting shots indeed. They were aiming to have the trams running through Oldham by this Autumn. I'm not sure if that's achievable but they've done a fair bit. You probably did pass through here on the way to Diggle but I would have thought that ground zero (Oldham Mumps) is a place to avoid. I certainly avoid now for the most part. It's a nightmare for traffic, and will continue to be so once the trams are running.

  • @981smithy Thanks Phil. I've only filmed this for historical reasons really. From what I've read, and from my own feelings, about 99% of the people don't want the Metro here. The main issues for me are with the poor planning. There's severing of the line with the National Rail network, the demolition of the old station (when they've gone and built a temporary replacement), and then there's "ground zero"; the levelling of a perfectly good viaduct and bridges for the trams to be at street level.

  • Interesting shots of the progress (and otherwise) David. Plenty of work going on in the Oldham area and I think I passed close by some of this last week on the A62 from the M60 towards Diggle. (But maybe not.) Chris

  • Looks like the work is coming along nicely.
