The dad was upset because they worked so hard for her to be a US citizen and she wanted to throw it all away and take another nationality. It had nothing to do with Canada in particular; if the dad thought she said 'I want to be Mexican' he would have reacted the same way. Of course, nationalities aside, the joke is really about her silly misunderstanding with her parents...not about Canada.
