Dreams :: Episode 4 :: Yes I Like him (Part 1)

Sorry for not posting this series in a long time.

When you ask yourself, 'Do I like Shane?', a strong positive answer pops up : yes. Yes. Really, how can you doubt it? You haven't stopped thinking about him from the moment you saw him on the soccer field.
As you get ready for bed, you think about all the problems this realization will cause. Carter says she's over him, but it's still not cool for you to move in so quickly. What's the acceptable waiting period before you're allowed to date your best friend's ex? Is there an accceptable waiting period, or is it always forbidden?
Its not fair, you think while you brush your teeth. Under normal circumstances, the first thing you would do would be to call Carterand hash all this out with her. It makes you feel just awful that there's a part of your thoughts you two can't share.
As you snuggle down under your covers, you have to face the biggest question of all.
Okay, good, you know you like Shane. But you don't know if he likes you.
You're still thinking about Shane the next afternoon while you're helping your mother stake up the tomato plants in her small garden patch in the back yard. You are thinking how attraction is just like a small vine - it reaches out its tender little tendrils and clings to the person you desire, climbing up and getting stronger as it grows towards the sun - when you faintly hear the doorbell ring inside the house.
"I'll get it," you tell your mom, and brush off your hands and head into the house.
When you open the door, Shane is standing on your front porch.
Like you conjured him up out of the thin air by obsessing over him.
"Hey," he says.
"Hi," you say.
"Uh...I never do this," Shane tells you. He pulls a big orange Gerber daisy out from behind his back. "i brought this for you."
"Wow," you say, and that's pretty much all you're thinking too - wow. "Thanks." You take the flower and sniff it. It has no smell whatsoever except a flat waxiness. "Thats really nice of you."
"It's cool," Shane says. "I mean, you're welcome. It doesn't have to be big deal."
"Its a very pretty flower," you tell him. You push the door open wide. "Come on," you say. "I was working in the yard with my mom - come on back."'
"Okay," Shane replies, and he follows you into the house.
As you walk through your kitchen, you glance back at him and smile. Its so strange to see him there, next to your refrigerator.
"You're not going to make me do any yard work, are you?" Shane asks. "I just finished mowing my own lawn this morning."
"Everything's mowed," you reply as you step onto the outside the kitchen door. "We're just working in the garden."
You stop short when you see your mom on her knees in the middles of the tomato plants, leaning over to push a stake in the ground.
