This video is an overview of Project Maths, after it's first year of implementation.

Project Maths is a new maths syllabus for the 21st century so that students can cope confidently with mathematics in their studies and in their daily lives. Project Maths is also about promoting fresh, new, innovative pedagogies in the classroom, to promote higher order of thinking among the students and to encourage more classroom interaction and discussion. Finally it is about a new examination, both in the layout of the paper and in the style and format of the questions.

The aims of Project Maths are: To develop in students, the ability to think creatively about mathematics; to be able to conceptualise; and to be able to solve problems in daily life, as well as in mathematical concepts. Among other aims of Project Maths would be for students to be able to think critically and creatively and to be able to solve problems.

In Project Maths' first year, we followed two schools; the first was a junior cycle class from a school in Donegal and the second was a senior cycle class from a school in Carlow, to see what Project Maths would look like in action, in a classroom.

A lot of the activities are structured in such a way that the students are able to communicate with each other in a group dynamic. There is always a very delicate balance being maintained between, what the teacher is teaching and how they're teaching it, what their students are learning and how they're learning it.

We also ran teacher-training workshops during the year. At the workshops we model and showcase what a Project Maths class would look like in action. It's all about active participation for the teachers at the workshops so that they can see how that would transfer into the classroom for them.

How the future looks for maths in Ireland:

In the future there will be less emphasis on rote learning. Skills are an intrinsic part of mathematics and we will not forget that students do have to be proficient in, and be able to execute, skills and be efficient in doing so. However that alone is not mathematics. They also have to know why they're doing it, how they're doing it and how it will apply to their daily lives.

All resources used at workshops are available on the Project Maths website: www.projectmaths.ie
