With Australia struggling after day two of the second Test against the West Indies in 1984/85, Australian captain Kim Hughes, clearly under a great deal of stress, announced his resignation as captain.

I think this is the difference between Australia and England, when kim hughes cried and showed passion and emotion on air, speaking with some Australians they wanted to hurt him badly. When Gaza cried in the 1990 World Cup football World Cup, the nation loved him for that

Kim Hughes used to smack some BIG 6's...he's skip down the wicket and hoik the ball fair over the bowlers head into the stands.

@ProjectFlashlight612 We see the occasional dick-head but not to the scale of what I would call hooliganism or riotous behaviour. Barmy Army are good news, very witty and clever so much better than that bloody 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie Oi, Oi, Oi,' cringeworthy crap some go on with at the cricket and tennis. As an Australian I get embarrassed every time I hear it. During an Ashes Test as Freddie Flintoff ran in to bowl the bugler played the entire intro to The Flintstones, now that's clever.

@hirdy6 I know what you mean...we've had the Barmy Army here for matches, and they were rowdy but good-natured. It's hooliganism that's the bad thing...never see cricket hooligans, do ya? :)

@ProjectFlashlight612 More than a game to guys like him but even so if that's the worst thing that happens to him then he's doing well. However passion is one of the reasons I love sport as long as it doesn't get out of hand as in the case of some English football and Indian cricket fans.

@hirdy6 You make a lot of sense. I still think it's a bit silly to get so worked up over a game, though.

@ProjectFlashlight612 Fair enough it's just a game to you but to work your whole life to reach the pinnacle of your craft, your profession requires a lot of passion and to have to resign under such circumstances would just be gut wrenching. It was a very public humiliation and the pressure just built and built. Everyone handles such situations differently. Kim Hughes had no support whatsoever from the start when Ian Chappell said 'Kim Hughes got the gold mine while Rod Marsh got the shaft'.

I was a little too young to remember this but have read about it since and even watching it now it's quite emotional....apparently he was hammered by the aussie media at the time for the tears but to me it shows the pride he had for the baggy green that saying goodbye to the captaincy reduced the man to a blubbering wreck..I really feel sorry for the bloke...as an Englishman of asian background I know how many beatings we took in the ashes after this so in a way it was a good thing for australia
