44' after Huallanca, having gone thru' the "Cañon del Pato". The road from Caraz to Huallanca is impressive. 25kms from Caraz (2,250m / approx. 6,000ft ASL) the road enters into the pass/gorge called "Cañon del Pato" which lasts for approx 14kms and has some 35 tunnels. They say it is asphalted.. but you´d never guess! The road from Huallanca to Chuquicara is even worse...not tarmaced, and is only passable when it doesn't rain and only in a 4x4 - unless you are a microbus or lorry. I just don't know how they do it! I have a 4x4 and although I never got stuck, I certainly would not have entertained it in a Renault 5! The books recommend that only people with a lot of exerience and with "robust" vehicles etc etc.. and there are no petrol stations! Great trip and I videoed it all! {The clicks you hear on the video are my digital camera - glad that I had learnt to drive with my knees - knew it would come in useful one day!} The road from Chuquicara to Chimbote is tarmaced (asphaltada) and very good. . .
