http://www.emergencyfoodwarehouse.com... In this video we show you how to assemble the Big Berkey Water Filter. Assembling any Berkey Filter is actually very simple. Every model is done the same way.

The first step in assembling any Berkey Water Filter is washing it out. Then you attach the spigot and any needed plugs for the holes, if you don't have extra filters. You must prime the Black Berkey Filters and then attach them to the upper chamber. Screw on the handle to the lid, stack up the upper and lower chambers and you're all set!

All you need to do to filter water through a Berkey Water Filter is pour water into the upper chamber and let gravity do the rest. It will pass through the filter elements, be cleaned, and pour into the lower chamber. You can use the spigot to access the clean water.

Great video. Others on youtube don't show the filter priming process. How fast do you need to use the filtered water? How long can it sit in the bottom chamber?

    Thanks for your video.

Unless you are in a significant emergency, I personally wouldn't want to drink water that's been sitting in the bottom chamber for more than a couple weeks. Yes it is clean, but it's not a completely sealed chamber which means it is open to outside air. I guess it all depends on the environment the chamber is kept in and for how long. Non-answer, I know but those are my thoughts. Anyone have any insight here?

the directions say the white washer goes on the outside with the slightly curved side against the berkey.

So after reading your comments and other peoples reply's plus a helpful how to on bigberkywaterfilters(dot)com I decided to empty the basin and switch the seals which so far has worked. I filled the bottom basin up 3/4 with tap water to test for water tightness and no leaks... I guess their instructions are hinky. maybe they need to fox that.

I am confused because the instructions I have state

"I. Place the black washer onto the threaded portion of the outlet spigot.

    J. Insert thread of spigot through hole in side of the lower chamber. Place the white washer over the thread within the chamber with the beveled side towards the hole and secure in place with the nut. Tighten securely by hand only."

Unless I'm reading that wrong it sounds like the white goes on the inside however several other resources conflict with that estimation.

5:47 see that tiny screw for the lid? I dropped it down the sink. There's a little washer that comes with it too...which i also dropped down the sink. Hope it's not too much of a pain to find replacements.

I use the water so quickly I don't worry about it. I'm filling my berkey a few times a week. I use it for everything.

I left the white washer inside since tightening the heck out of it seemed to work. Do you dump out the water that doesn't make it out the drain holes, or just keep adding water? It would seem that leaving standing water at the bottom of the tank would let germs breed.
