This is the second test performed with the Canon Powershot SX220 HS, shot recently in the late afternoon in the South West of England. This clip is the original .Mov file, split down to the first four minutes (resulting in a 1.07 GB file) with no transcoding (granted, it will be rencoded by YouTube, and the footage has reduced quality as a result). The camera was in 1920x1080 24p mode, taking advantage of the manual control option on this model. The supplied battery was used and the SDHC card was a Transcend 16GB Class 10.

Main settings for this test were as follows:

Shutter speed: 1/50th of a second
Aperture: F4.0
ISO: 100
Lens: 28mm
White balance: Auto
Custom Colors: Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpness set to minimum. No further changes were made to this setting.

  • The only Question is, what happend to the gray cat before 2:28 that made him/her so pissed off.

  • @zugif

Hi! Heh, it's the other way round. The grey cat is the brother of the black cat, who is a girl. He wanted to play and she didn't, hence the antics. Hope this makes more sense now!

Heh! Confusing for you! However, Eugenia's site explains how to use an ND filter to trick the camera into reducing the shutter speed. Note that this is only necessary outside, mainly in bright conditions. Inside, the camera sets a sensible shutter speed for video, which you can check, as explained in that article. You have the same camera as Toni, work together!

Also, check out the 'Cheesycam' website for good DIY tips for making stabilisers, supports, etc.

  • @coastaltype I just realised we have different cams. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't set certain things. I've got an IXUS 220 HS aka ELPH 300 HS!

Cheers, it's exciting what can be done with these cameras. I couldn't afford a DSLR, so this is the next best thing for me.

  • @tonihott2

I'm inland, but I love the coast, so a beach clip with (or without, preferably both!) your filter/polarizer would be grand to see.

Hey, no problem. It's all about sharing information. There is loads more on her site, click on the 'filmmaking' link on the right to quickly get to the most useful.

Hi! I used the full manual mode this camera has. It makes it dead easy just to select what shutter speed and aperture, ISO, custom colours, all sorts. You don't have to wade through loads of menus to get to what you want, only one deep for most options. Shutter and aperture just need a press up on the dial, then you can change them. Which I like. Check out the full text I put up with the clips to find out what settings I've used and details about the file produced.

  • Btw, I bought many years ago a 70mm polarizer filter and tried to use it with my Canon Ixus cam, and it's fantastic, the colors of the beach near my house look gorgeous with it, maybe i'll post a sample.

  • @coastaltype Many thanks again. I'm reading it and it's really interesing. I want to try one of these ND filters on my cam now. I fear, though, that they can't be useful with the sx large zoom. Anyhow I'd love more tests and what you can archive with this little marvel.
