Sept. 3, 2011-The setting was the Metroflex Gym in Long Beach, California. The event was the Southern California Open Powerlifting Championship.
In a very tough setting, where a fast pace, coupled with high temperatures and dehydration were continual problems, I had 2 goals for the deadlift portion of this meet. The first goal was to set an American record with my opening lift. I did that with a pull of 585 lbs. My second goal was to crush that newly-set record with a 650-lb. pull on my second attempt. I pulled it quickly to the knees, where it slowed just a bit, and then I thrust my hips forward to expedite the lockout. 3 white lights from the judges, and I had a new American record. My combined total for the 3 lifts was 1615 lbs., which was also a new American record.
