The Prophet,saw, forbade barbaric practises like matam, and he said: No harm may be inflicted on oneself. This was a practise of the Jahiliyyah Arabs and the Prophet,saw, forbade it, as well as the Quran. Allah Almighty condemns the pagans for the barbaric way in which they would worship:

Their [pagan] prayer at the House (of Allah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands; therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve! (Quran, 8:35)

what is better to waiste your blood on the streets, or donate it to a blood bank in the name of Imam Hussain? Imagine what type of attention that will have if a large group of Muslims donated their blood for Imam Hussain (AS) and your blood saved someones life.

I feel nausea from the new hype of shia rejecting tatbeer , be it under the false pretext of "tarnishing the image of the sect" or the "salon" fatwas of some extra illuminated marja' .

Tatbeer is a glimpse of "I wish I was with you" (ya laytana kunna ma3akom) , and nothing infront Imam Sajjad (pbuh) crying blood in Ashura .
