GP Rider Game Sample - Game Gear

GP Rider is a simple Arcade racing game originally developed by Sega in 1990 for Arcades, but was later ported to Sega Master System in 1993 and Game Gear in 1994. The game is primarily like Hang-On and Super Hang-On, with each port differing in various ways (for example, the SMS game still has split-screen action and features customizable bikes, but the Game Gear game does not). The Arcade game featured constant split-screen action regardless of the number of players, but the Game Gear game uses a single screen for single player. The game features four modes: Arcade, Tournament, Grand Prix, and World Tour. Arcade seems to feature one stage, then game over... it's mostly pointless, but is good for introducing the game. Tournament is a cool mode that allows you to choose the circuits you want to play and then compete against your opponents for points. Grand Prix is just like Tournament, except you must compete on all fourteen normal courses one after the next. World Tour is the same as Super Hang-On's Arcade Mode (right down to recycling the same map and difficulties).

You have your choice of three different bikes to choose from and must race qualifying laps to determine your starting position. You simply accelerate and brake as required, with the road usually giving signals for upcoming turns. The game features little in the way of audio, but the visuals are pretty good and move at a smooth 60FPS. Overall, the game isn't anything special and should've been released several years sooner, instead of being released as a fairly late GG game. The most interesing thing about this game is that "Wayne", your rival from the Arcade game, still makes an appearance as a random racer. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.

This looks too much like Sega's own Hang-On games... minus the lack of challenge and enemy AI.

Not a bad game for a handheld. The colors are nice and vibrant. However, the game's sound effects are quite irritating when making turns and it is quite lacklustre in terms of a challenge with the lack of enemy AI: there are few competitors on the track which makes the game somewhat boring.
