@EdibleFox "Dixie" tells the story of a freed black slave pining for the plantation of his birth.I've read that some (we'll never know the true #) slaveowners provided a good, stable place for slaves. After being freed, most former slaves struggled - they had to earn a living, find a place to live and start a new life. The federal gov't was all about getting them freed, but did nothing to help them make the huge changes they went through after being freed. Some things never change.
