Owen reads at 25 months, he actually began this at 20 months old (not the 22 like I had originally thought). Though, it is probably more like a visual ability than an actual language/communication ability. He has essentially learned this on his own, picking things up from his books, toys and games. What is most curious to me is that he reads these words outside of context and the words I write are fairly random, not a sequence or set of flashcards that he is accustomed to.
He had delayed speech and language at 18 months (receptive and expressive). Seriously, he was not even pointing at 18 months. We had him evaluated through early intervention and they classified him as PDD. He receives all kinds of therapy, 17 hours a week. The curious thing about this ability is that in a matter of 2 months he went from essentially pulling us around by our hands to communicate, to identifying most of the words in this video. Color, animals, numbers and shapes mainly. The words are mostly nouns and items that he is familiar with. And if he does not know a word, he tries to sound it out.
Since he is loosely classified at autistic for now, I am not sure if this is a splinter skill or maybe just simply hyperlexia. Time will tell. In the meantime, I continue to be amazed and impressed by his abilities.
amazing! he seems like such a sweet little boy.
my son is was diagnosed with pdd-nos and hyperlexic as well...but your child seems to have a much longer attention span!

Hi, how is your son doing? Owen's attention span is phenomenal. He is 28 months and is starting to read books, as opposed to his word labeling (which now includes words, like scissors, crocodile, moustache, aquarium) The other day, we sat him down with a child dictionary to see what he would do. He came across a sign language page, visually depicting the alphabet, he just sat and absorbed it. I flipped the page, he flipped it right back. Next day at daycare he started giving he hand sign for W.
