Onyx White, 16, and Martin Freeles, 17, both of Roxbury, were arrested Wednesday in connection with the clerk's slaying. They were arraigned in Roxbury District Court on murder, masked armed robbery and various gun charges.
Gerardo Serrano, 71, was killed during a robbery Sunday at Hermanos Unidos on Dudley Street, where he worked as an assistant to the store's owner.
Their faces were covered and at least one of the assailants brandished a handgun, Fredette said of the 10:30 a.m. incident. As the clerk behind the counter complied with a demand for cash, Fredette said, Serrano made his way from the back of the store to the front. He resisted the robbery, the prosecutor told the court.
"Mr. Serrano resisted a little bit when these individuals demanded money from him. At which time, one of the individuals, Mr. White or Mr. Freeles, fired a single shot toward the back of the store," prosecutor Dave Fredette said. The first shot missed Serrano, Fredette said.
"At this time, Mr. Serrano was able to grab his cane and tried to use his cane to defend himself, at which time, a second shot was fired, striking Mr. Serrano. Mr. Serrano died as a result of that gunshot wound," Fredette said.
He left behind a wife of 46 years, nine children, 28 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
