  • @alfalfalf101 dude i get you not liking the book's message but to say its terribly written! it's ian mcewan, one of the foremost writers of the 21st century.

  • @alfalfalf101 yep, coz its well rational to believe in an omnibenevolent and omnipotent god in a world that has cancer and AIDs and starvation.

  • @clancy6969 In the book a little boy was in the basket and it was heading for power line. His grandpa had landed the balloon but didn't take the safety precautions so a bunch of passersby tried to stop it from taking off and they all hung onto the ropes as it was taking off again, they all let go except for one man, the balloon went about 100 feet up and the man slipped and died.

  • @GamerSwipeTV he's viggo mortensen's twin you know!

  • @clancy6969 They're trying to hold the balloon down in a strong wind, get carried away and someone lets go of the rope - dies.

  • @ImaginaryBandName I know McEwan is a vocal atheist, I love listening to him speak and I love reading his works. Sue me :P But, I was engaged with alfalfa101 on *just the book* by itself as a thing to be read and discussed... not as a part of his oeuvre or any larger agenda. And by itself, the book is excellent, well-written, thought provoking and like I said before, haunted me. (The part that really upset me was the description of the corpse, not anything re: Christianity.)

  • @invisblchzbrgr The book is brilliant and Jed is a very skewed Christian (not the typical), but McEwan has been very vocal about his feelings on Christianity in general, referring to people who believe in any god as "dim." While I don't think he is trying to paint all Christians as lunatics, he is presenting Christianity as a madman's religion. McEwan is a genius writer/craftsman, but sometimes he can be a little heavy handed with his (non)religious and political views (see: Saturday and Solar).

  • How does a person going up in a balloon die?

  • @invisblchzbrgr I think McEwan used his madness to represent the madness of Christians which is pretty crude if you ask me. And to be honest I think a lot of people were drawn in by the horrible bias towards "rationalism" (and thus Atheism) when in fact rationalism and religion are totally compatible.

  • @alfalfalf101 Your own Christianity is clouding your judgment. The "actual detail" of Jed's faith was totally skewed by his madness. Even as an atheist I only saw that Jed was disturbed, I did not attribute it to his "faith." Give people some credit, no one of sense believes he represented Christianity in any true way. Just chill already.
