Facebook Places were launched in Ireland recently but with the new business page layouts arriving shortly afterwards we haven't given them much attention yet.

This week we show you how to set up and claim a Facebook Place for your business. We are playing around with them a bit at the moment and hope to be showing you some other cool ways that they can be used to promote your business in the future.

The first stage of claiming your Facebook Place is to check into your location. To do this you will require a smart phone. If you don't have one maybe ask an employee or friend to do it for you.

Once they have checked in your page is created, you just need to find it on Facebook, the easiest way to do this is to find your checkin on your profile page and click the link.

Next claim it by clicking 'is this your business' in the left hand column. Facebook require you to either add an email address that contains a domain name related to your business (e.g. something@spiderworking.com) or upload a utility bill in the business name.

You will get a verification email from Facebook once your claim has been checked. Now you can customise the page and even merge it with your existing business page. Be aware that once you have merged a page you cannot un-merge it. If you have several locations or ideas of expanding to more than one location this might not be the right solution for you.

Are you already using Facebook Places? Do you have any tips or questions you would like to share? If so please leave a comment below.
