On 11/4/2009 at approximately 0853 hours, units from the southside were dispatched to the area of 24309 Westernport Road for a reported house fire. Chief 22 T. Dayton arrived on the scene and reported a working house fire. Chief 22 established the Westernport Road Command. Engine Tanker 22 responded with 5 and Lt D. Steiding. The initial alarm on the assignment was Engine Company 22, Truck 24, Tanker 36, Engine Rescue 23, and EMS 50. A one story single family dwelling with fire and smoke showing on arrival. Engine Tanker 22 arrived on the scene and positioned on side alpha for fire attack. Fire was visible from the Charlie/Delta Corner of the residence. Due to the lack of water supply in the area, Command requested a tanker task force, bringing tankers from 33(Keyser, WV), 38 (New Creek, WV), 39 (Fountain, WV), 20 (Lonaconing, MD), and 18 (Midland, MD). The engine crew from 22 pulled an 1 3/4" attack line and advanced to the front door. The engine crew did an aggressive attack on the fire and knocked down the bulk of the fire within a couple minutes. Engine 24 arrived and pulled a back up line while Engine Rescue 23 went to the roof for ventilation. The crew from 36 was assigned RIT while the tanker dropped off the dump tank. Squad 22 responded with 4. Lt 22 Steiding had the interior while Safety 22 Householder took care of the safety. Units on the scene were Engine Tanker 22, Chief 22, Squad 22, Engine Rescue 23, Engine 24, Tanker 36, Tanker 33, Engine Tanker 38, Tanker 39, Tanker 20, Tanker 18, Air/Light 38, and EMS 50. Additional units on the scene were Westernport PD, Allegany County Bureau of Police, Fire Police, Alleghany Power, and FM 25. Engine 36 and Engine Tanker 38 later filled at Station 22. Units cleared the scene after about 1 1/2 hours later.

Yeah, this doesn't waste that much time and it also gives you the time to look at the situation and what you are about to get into. Time to give each firefighter, their own initial size up.

The way we look at this, is a safety issue. The time it takes to put the facepiece on versus having your vision impaired when you get off of the rig with it on. We feel that with the facepiece on when you get off of the rig, puts you at risk of missing something because of the mask blocking some of your vision. You could possibly miss things like a power line down that live, step into a hole that you might not see and many other hazards on the fireground.
