Of course it's safe to burn coal in a masonry "regular" fireplace! EVERY hydrocarbon fuel produces some carbon monoxide when burned; wood, gas, heating oil, wood pellets included. The CO produced from wood combustion will kill you as quickly as the CO produced from coal combustion. If you're fireplace is venting properly, this is an irrelevant concern because all combustion byproducts of any fuel burned will be venting outside where they will quickly be diluted and rendered harmless.

Is that a special fireplace??? I would love to burn coal in an open fireplace, but I"m afraid of carbonmonoxide gas... is it safe to burn coal in a regular masonary fireplace????
